Good Health & Safety process helps to retain staff.
According to Ahmed & Waqas (2017), ‘Injuries that occur during work have long term consequences and these can be the symbol of cost in social and economic terms to worker, employers, company, and the government as well. It is identified that ‘in US 2007 5488 workers died from occupational injuries among 92% were men’.
Due to limited
resources, less knowledge and skills, companies fail to priority health and
safety measures. This in return, companies need to bear cost for poor
performance and high employee turnover. (Ward et al, 2008 cited in Ahmed & Waqas, 2017).
It is identified that any form of job is faced with certain amount of risk. Therefore, it is so important that companies are aware of causation of accidents. (IPM, 2010) Below figure 3.0 explains that accidents can cause due to combination of unsafe acts and unsafe work environment.

Safety management
process should be there which is all about identifying problems areas and
planning out prevention methods and safety processes prior to the occurrence of
the accidents. (IPM, 2010).
According to
Bohlander & Snell (2012), by having a successful ergonomic program
can help companies to avoid health and safety issues.
Key elements
for a successful Ergonomics program.
- Provide notice and training for employee - Companies should implement ergonomics policies and train employees, supervisors and managers in basic workplace ergonomics. (Bohlander & Snell,2012).
- Conduct preinjury hazard assessment - Survey the workplace and work processes for potential hazards and adapt measures to lessen the exposure to ergonomic risk factors. (Bohlander & Snell, 2012).
- Involve employees – Companies can include staff in risk assessments, design of work-specific tools and equipment and setting up work rules and guidelines. (Bohlander & Snell, 2012).
- Plan & execute – Integrate ergonomic responsibilities into the performance plans. (Bohlander & Snell, 2012).
- File injury reports – Encourage early reporting of injuries. Refer employees to the company’s medical facility or to the employee’s physician for treatment. (Bohlander & Snell, 2012).
- Evaluate and assess the program – Periodically review the effectiveness of the program and determine underlying causes for failure and propose corrective changes. (Bohlander & Snell, 2012).

Hi Dulanjana, This article explains how health and safety process will connect to employee retention of an organization. According to Zinger model, it says that positive working environment to promote engagement, appreciation to the employees, providing competitive pay and benefits with healthy work-life balance will develop employee engagement in a company(Hussainy, 2020). Therefore healthy work-life balance should be considered more by managers and it is very much important for the employees such that they give their higher attention for health and safety as they give it to their salary and wages.
